Baker NV is out in the middle of nowhere. It's a tiny, little town on America's loneliest highway, but there is one thing that makes this place special. Baker is located in the heart of the Great Basin and has this modern facility called 'The Great Basin Visitors Center'.
The visitors center is a veritable oasis in the desert and the people who live in the town take a lot of pride in their wonderful stopping point. Inside the building is a book store run by Clare, who has lived in Baker for over 30 years and is extremely helpful and friendly. She told us about the Lehman caves that are nearby and places we could stay if we needed to stay overnight in the town. Talking to her, it was clear that she had a lot of pride in her small community and it reminded me of the same kind of feeling Jaine and I have for our little town of Brodhead WI.
Jaine and I talked with her for a few more minutes and were about to leave when Clare said "Did you see the movie?" "What movie?" we asked. She said "If you have some time, you should watch this movie about the Great Basin, it's really pretty good. The person who produced the movie did a really good job and I think you would like it." I was a little tired from all of the riding that day and needed and excuse to sit down and take a break and boy was I glad I did. The movie was excellent. About 20 minutes long the video had some absolutely fantastic shots of the area and wonderful interviews of people who live their lives in the Great Basin and love it so much. The movie featured a short introduction to Lehman Caves by a young woman who's passion is to research the cave, a young rancher who describes why he loves the land of which he makes a living and and older couple who hike all over the area and describe it's beauty and why they appreciated it so much.
The quality of the work done on this movie reminded me of the work done by my friend, Patrick Bodell of the Empire Media Group in Monroe WI, who has been producing our movies to promote our cause. You can see in that the producer of this movie really cared about this area and this feeling came out loud and clear when watching this well crafted video.
You might not be traveling through Baker NV anytime soon, but if you do, definitely check out The Great Basin Visitor Center and be sure to take time to watch the movie.
