Nevada - A Great Place to Ride if You Like Long Distance

I have to say I love riding in Nevada.

There were a lot of reasons why I shouldn't have liked to ride that wonderful state.  Nevada is the most mountainous state in nation (look it up, I didn't believe it either).  Mike Bosomworth, who recently crossed the United States from east to west, warned me that Nevada was the toughest state he had to cross.  There were no services for long distances.  The roads extend for so long that you think the road is tilted uphill even though you're going downhill or vice versa.

Somewhere between Fallon and Middlegate

Here's why I liked Nevada.

There is practically no one on the roads.  It's like having a beautifully asphalted 2 lane bike trail all to yourself.  Yes, there lots of high passes one has to climb, but there are great downhill runs, too.  The roads are so smooth you can let the bike go and feel relatively safe at high speeds (I got up to 45 mph on a few downhills but know I have gone faster, I was just too scared to look down).  We lucked out with beautiful weather in the 70's to the 90's.

The downside?  Long rides.  Here is a list of the distances I traveled crossing Nevada.

Folsom CA to Omo Ranch CA                                                       49 miles (climbed 1850 ft)

Omo Ranch CA to  to Kirkwood CA                                            38.5 miles (climbed 3800 ft)  (first day off since San Francisco)

Kirkwood CA (at the border) to Moundhouse NV              60.5 miles   (decended 3870 ft)

Moundhouse NV to Middlegate NV                                          102.5.miles   (climbed 800 ft)

Middlegate NV to Austin NV                                                          65 miles    (climbed 2600 ft)

Austin NV to Eureka NV                                                                    68 miles    (climbed 1150 ft)

Eureka NV to Ely NV                                                                           78 miles    (climbed 1500 ft)

Ely NV to Baker NV                                                                              63 miles   (climbed 2250 ft)

Baker NV to Milford UT                                                                     84 miles   (climbed 1800 ft)

When we went from Milford UT to Cedar City, UT we took a day off in Brian Head, UT, the second day we've had a day off since starting the trip.

In 6 days we went 459 miles.  I have never done that kind of riding in my life, but I'm surprised how well I'm feeling despite the long rides. Nevada has been very, very good to me.
